I have not seen any configuration using different catalog for primary and standby (there could be but I havent seen it). Moreover purpose of using rman at standby site is to reduce workload on primary so that in case of failure you can restore the backup. In case of failure, you would need to connect to this very catalog. Anyways I think you can register first primary database at catalog and then take standy backups. I guess this works when both the primary and secondary database register in the same catalog. I have already mentioned that in my question the one you are referring if both the database are in the same catalog then the standby database will automatically get registered in the catalog database if the catalog database is different then i dont think that standby database will automatically get registered in database. You need to ensure that you apply all packages mentioned in OS pre-requisite for oracle installation. I had ORACLE_SID SET to orcl1 and orcl2 on both the nodes respectively. On node1, I did the above steps, and I luckily was able to connect to Oracle. It did not say 'connected to idle instance'. The O/P of the query on Node1 (ORACLE_SID=+ASM1) is NAME PATH MOUNT_S HEADER_STATUS ORCL:VOL1 CLOSED UNKNOWN ORCL:VOL1 CLOSED UNKNOWN ORCL:VOL1 CLOSED UNKNOWN The O/P of the query on Node2 (ORACLE_SID=orcl2) is NAME PATH MOUNT_S HEADER_STATUS VOL1 ORCL:VOL1 OPENED UNKNOWN VOL2 ORCL:VOL2 OPENED UNKNOWN VOL3 ORCL:VOL3 OPENED UNKNOWN Does that mean that the multipath disks have not been picked up by asm at all. What about the permissions. I am not too sure on this. For vip not getting started "CRS-1006: No more members to consider": It is very difficult error to sort out. You have to set tracing to know the exact reason for this. I had this issue one time and eventually I had to recreate the entire system. But you can try to Remove the VIP resource and add it again and see what happens. Are you trying to start ASM instance and getting these errors? What is the command that you are using? Is ASM and Oracle home are same? To use asmcmd, you need to export ORACLE_SID to +ASM4 by logging on 4th instance. 2)When you create database using DBCA, oracle automatically add's database to the OCR. In case you wish to add instance, then use DBCA instance management option to add instance which will also register the database.
